Mandi Schwartz, a painfully shy Yale student-athlete who rallied a community and lived with a cheerfulness and caring that will extend her legacy for generations, passed away Sunday after a long battle with acute myeloid leukemia.

Schwartz, 23, who played women's ice hockey at Yale, battled cancer for nearly 2 1/2 years. She had been receiving treatment in her hometown of Wilcox, in Saskatchewan.
