Yale Faces $28g Fine for Lack of Toxin Cleanup Funds at Lab

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is threatening Yale with a $28,475 fine because the university allegedly failed to set money aside for cleaning possible contamination left behind when the Wright Nuclear Structure Laboratory is closed, the EPA announced Monday. The EPA complaint contends that Yale failed to submit up-to- date "financial assurance" information in 2003 and 2004, as required by the federal Resource Conservation and Recovery Act.

EPA New England Regional office spokesman David Deegan said Monday that the action is part of a new EPA push to ensure that companies and institutions that handle hazardous waste have sufficient funds to properly clean up after themselves when they stop activity involving the waste.
