Officer Didn't Workday of Alleged Theft, Shift Records Show

Summary

- Police shift records released to the Register Thursday show that Officer John Harkins was not on duty the day a local computer store owner claims the cop drove up in a police car and took a computer monitor without paying. Robert Kalish, the owner of Benchmark Computer, accused Harkins last month of stealing the monitor. Harkins, however, claimed the item was owed as commission earned for computer goods he sold for the shop. Kalish told police the item was taken April 28, 2005, and that Harkins was in police uniform and driving a squad car at the time. A second employee stated in the arrest warrant affidavit that the incident occurred "on or about April 28."

Shift records show however, that Harkins was not on duty on April 25, 2005 through April 30, 2005. Officers do not have access to police vehicles while off duty.
