Summary


When I was very young, I can remember my father using quotes to motivate me, either before or after one of my games. I always acted as if I understood the meaning, but most times, I did not. He would say, "What counts is not necessarily the size of the dog in the fight: It's the size of the fight in the dog." Also, "The difference between the impossible and the possible lies in a person's determination." Then there is, "You can because you think you can," and "Winners never quit and quitters never win."

My father is a teacher, and he knew coaching your own child is one of the hardest things a person can do. Therefore, rather than analyze my every move in a game and risk having me shut him out, he used quotes to inspire me to try harder, do better, and to play to my potential. There were never any arguments or negativity as we rode home in the car. I just remember those puzzling quotes.
