Utility to Pay $8.5m in Derby Fire; Yankee Gas Settles Suit in Blaze That Killed Woman, 2 Kids

Summary

Yankee Gas has agreed to pay $8.5 million to settle the lawsuit filed by the estate of a Derby woman and her two children who perished in a 1991 fire, the highest payout of any of the defendants in the civil case stemming from the blaze. The amount of the recent Yankee Gas settlement was made public in Probate Court in Ansonia after a hearing there Wednesday morning.

The gas company was one of several defendants. The city of Derby recently settled for $2 million, half of which will be paid by the city's former insurance company, The Hartford. The Derby Housing Authority, another defendant, has agreed to pay $400,000. The family's landlord, Richard Kastens, settled years ago for $431,500. The figures were outlined in a consolidated settlement statement filed in Probate Court this week.
