Judge Upholds 'Piccolo Pete' Fireworks Ban

A Connecticut judge has upheld a state effort to ban the sale of "Piccolo Pete"-type fireworks, which emit 4-5 inch flames, because they don't qualify as the type of "sparklers" allowed under state law. "This decision is clearly a victory for public safety on the eve of our next July 4th weekend," said state Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, who said the ruling sends a clear message about the sale of "perilous pyrotechnics" in Connecticut.

But a lawyer for American Promotional Events Inc., the parent company of fireworks maker TNT Fireworks, called the decision "faulty and ... inconsistent with the statute" governing fireworks sales in Connecticut.
