Summary
As a former United Church of Christ member, I was interested in the controversy about Barack Obama's speech at a UCC meeting in Hartford in June 2007. In 1981, I rejoined my local Congregational church after a short absence, only to have it absorbed by the UCC soon after. Things remained unchanged for a bit. Then there was a subtle shift to the politically correct position on everything, including a national movement to rewrite every hymn. No longer was the pronoun "he" acceptable. It might offend some woman and so our beloved hymn book made room for New Age music. Other changes began to appear in the service: a shift to an ecumenical style. However, the most disturbing trend was the move to politicize the congregation.
We were expected to feed and clothe every poor soul on Earth, which was an understandable mission within the limits of our pocketbooks. Then came the thrust to accept and understand the point of view of every enemy the United States had, to the day when one minister suggested we invite Saddam Hussein "to the table" as our equal.See the full content of this document
