Letter to the Editor:Truth About Iraq Overwhelms Positive Spin

Summary


In an editorial marking the third anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Iraq, the Register attempted to put a positive spin on a disastrous situation that continues to spin out of control, and verges on civil war. In calling the decision to depose Saddam Hussein an "honorable" one, the Register ignores how the Bush administration purposely conflated Saddam with al-Qaida and Sept. 11 in the buildup to the war. President Bush recently denied his administration ever made such connections. It's difficult to understand how such deceitfulness and manipulation of public opinion could be considered "honorable."

The Register claimed that "subordinates ... filtered out contradictory intelligence before it reached the president." But it was Secretary of State Colin Powell, who had doubts about the invasion from the start, who warned Bush about the "Pottery Barn rule" - you break it, you own it. That is exactly where we are in Iraq today.
