Tough W. Haven Mom Laid Law Down to Sons

Summary

WEST HAVEN -- Muriel Altschuler was a pretty shrewd cookie. "About 15 years ago, my mother started working as a paralegal for my brother (Donald Altschuler of Wallingford) and me at our law firm, Altschuler and Altschuler," said son Richard Altschuler of Orange. "The only problem was, she kept thinking of herself as our mother. She would be constantly looking at our expenses, for instance, and why didn't we call this client back and so on. So, we said to her, 'Mom, it really isn't working out because you are thinking of yourself as our mother.' The very next day, we were served with two lawsuits, one based on sex and age discrimination and the other was an eviction notice, because she owned our building. As the marshal was handing us the documents, the phone rang. It was our mother, saying, 'You want to settle out of court?' We immediately welcomed her back. She definitely put us in our place. And she turned out to be a great paralegal."

Altschuler died Jan. 29 at age 91.
