A journalist recently asked me whether it was better to "push" children as young as 2 to learn to use the toilet or "wait until they decide to do it on their own." She had no idea that the manner in which she framed her question reflected the misunderstanding that has developed over the simple matter of toilet training. That's right -- simple.

In fact, teaching a child to use the toilet is no different than teaching a child to feed himself with a spoon.
