Theater Review: Shubert's High-Energy 'Twelve Angry Men' a Must-See

Anyone contemplating buying tickets to Reginald Rose's "Twelve Angry Men" at the Shubert Theater may ask himself: Is it worth coughing up $56 when I can rent the classic film for $3, or, better yet, wait 20 minutes for it to air again on television? Simply put: You betcha.

"Twelve Angry Men," the national tour of Roundabout Theatre Company's Broadway production, is terrific ensemble theater. The production, which ends today, stars Richard Thomas as Juror #8 (Henry Fonda in Sidney Lumet's 1957 film) and George Wendt as Juror #1 (Martin Balsam opposite Fonda), the production can't escape sounding like the movie. Yet it has freshness and several subtle nuances that distinguish it as its own.
