'Sweet' No. Branford Veteran Had Strong Work Ethic ?

Summary

NORTH BRANFORD -- Austin "Shawn" Irwin had his own special way of showing affection. "I got my first apartment when I was 18," said a daughter, Robyn Inglese of North Branford. "My dad was heartbroken because I was moving out and growing up. I had just gotten a job and wanted to be on my own. One day, shortly after I moved, there was a knock on my door. It was my dad, in tears. He had my toothbrush in his shirt pocket and said, 'You forgot your toothbrush.' I thought that was the most beautiful thing. It took him awhile to get used to me being on my own. He would say to me, 'You know you can always come back home.'"

Irwin died July 16 at 77.
