Summary
State Department of Education spokesman Thomas Murphy told the New Haven Register that charter schools promised to do more with less, implying that he feels the 75 percent funding formula shouldn't be increased. In the 2006-07 school year, New Haven's traditional public schools spent $14,508 per pupil. Public charter school Amistad Academy spent $12,283 per pupil. Amistad's test scores consistently far exceed the traditional schools' scores. This difference can't be explained solely by special education or grade level. They are doing more with less.
The less that Murphy refers to is a business model that forces successful schools to go to private donors to continue to operate.See the full content of this document
