Steven Hayes was soft-spoken and subdued Thursday in Superior Court as he pleaded not guilty in the July slayings of Jennifer Hawke-Petit and her daughters, Michaela, and Hayley, in their Cheshire home.
Hayes' brief appearance, during which he also waived a probable cause hearing amid heavy courthouse security, was reminiscent of co- defendant Joshua Komisarjevsky's appearance Tuesday, when he, too, pleaded not guilty and waived the probable cause opportunity.
