Seymour Panel Wants Synthetic Turf at Stadium

Summary

Four high school fields, including the football stadium, are in desperate need of repair, and the town Parks Commission has prepared a plan that includes purchasing synthetic turf for the stadium so that it can withstand increased use while the other fields are out of commission. Sponheimer Field is closed until it can be repaired, and Gesek Field needs new sod before the fall sports season, Parks Commission Chairman Bob Lang said. The subvarsity field is also in bad shape, he said.

Lang said he would like to see synthetic turf used on the football/soccer stadium at the high school. While the turf is more expensive in the short term - it costs about $500,000 - it can be used more frequently and would provide playing space while the other fields were being repaired, he said. The new synthetic turf also holds up during a rainstorm, while grass fields can turn to mud.
