A month of packing for a 13-day vacation When I was very small, as I would prepare to go to bed, my mother (no doubt to hurry things along) would explain that on the other side of the world, there lived a little girl very much like me except that she was Chinese and was at that very moment waking up and preparing to start her day.

When I would awaken in the morning, I often thought of that little Chinese girl who was now getting ready to go to bed, and the idea intrigued me and appealed to my sense of fairness.
