Selectmen Push Shorter Terms for Police Commissioners

OLD SAYBROOK -- Selectmen want the length of terms on the elected Police Commission reduced to make members more "responsible" to Town Hall and the general public. First Selectman Michael Pace on Wednesday made the proposal to reduce the terms from four years to two during a review of town charter changes submitted by the Charter Revision Commission. The commission also is recommending increasing Police Commission membership from five to seven.

There has been friction between selectmen and the Police Commission in recent years over labor issues, policy decisions and the Police Department's budget.
