Summary
In response to article "Stratford resident tests positive for swine flu," Connecticut is prepared and is getting more prepared every day. While professionals at the state Departments of Public Health and Emergency Management and Homeland Security are busy responding to events, Southern Connecticut State University is developing the next generation of disaster response professionals through its graduate certificate in emergency and disaster management. Over the past decade, public health preparedness and emergency management have grown to the point that disaster response is no longer a second job responsibility. While there is a reasonable amount of funding at the state level, it is imperative universities, municipal government, utilities, hospitals and schools continue to respond in parallel and ensure that career, community- based disaster professionals are trained and given the tools to protect residents.
Disaster response is not just terrorism, hurricanes and pandemics. It is also doing whatever is necessary to get businesses open the day after a water main breaks, ensuring disaster education programs for children and working to coordinate burials of an immigrant family after a fatal fire. Basically, it is managing all types of critical events from the point the first responders leave till the community is back to the "new normal."See the full content of this document
