Across the Board: Saratoga Meet Offers Prime Horse Racing

Summary

One horse racing meet that just about every thoroughbred handicapper circles on his or her calendar each year is the one that takes place at the Saratoga Race Course -- and with good reason. Saratoga is the summer retreat for many of the top horses, jockeys and trainers in the United States as they congregate there to produce the most exciting races you'll ever see at one meet. The 138th edition kicked off on Wednesday and the 36-day meet will conclude on Labor Day (Sept. 4).

Despite the retirement of Jerry Bailey, who dominated at Saratoga, the jockey colony once again is deep in talent with many of the top veteran and newcomers in the business on hand. Among the headliners are John Velasquez, Edgar Prado, Jose Santos, Richard Migliore, Mike Smith, Kent Desormeaux, Javier Castellano, Eibar Coa and 18-year-old Fernando Jara, who won the recent Belmont Stakes aboard Jazil.
