JRC Auto News Were governments in the United States and Canada right to bail out General Motors and Chrysler when the economy imploded in late 2008? We've found a memorandum by the Center for Automotive Research, a nonprofit organization based in Ann Arbor, Mich., that answers, emphatically, yes.

By enabling orderly bankruptcy proceedings and loaning $80 billion to the manufacturers and their financing arms (General Motors Acceptance Corp. and Chrysler Financial), the government saved more than 1.7 million jobs in 2009 and 2010.
