Rescue 'Defenders' Relief On Whitney?

Summary

With the demolition of the building at 155 Whitney Ave., New Haven, inevitable, I urge my employer and alma mater, Yale University, to see to it that the sculpted image on the front of the building is carefully dismantled so that it can be reused, either on campus or elsewhere in the city. I urge this not because the sculpture was part of a building designed by renowned local architect Douglas Orr or that it is a striking work of art, but because the scene depicted commemorates the single most important instance of town-gown cooperation ever between the people of New Haven and the Yale community: Yale students and their president, Naphtali Daggett, joining the citizens of New Haven in defending the city against a British invasion during the American Revolution.

The image depicts three cannoneers manning a field piece near the West River on July 5, 1779, during the Battle of New Haven.
