A Life Remembered: Vietnam Veteran Focused On Learning, Being Resourceful

Summary

Norman Stewart Sr. never finished school, but he never stopped learning. "He was a big reader and always improving his education, and he encouraged my sister and me to read and be resourceful," said Norman Stewart Jr. of Middletown. "If you were in a jam, he would help you, and if at first he didn't know how to help you, he would do the research and read up so he could."

Always working and a mostly private man, Stewart nevertheless occasionally took time out to have fun with his kids. "When I was 6, we were sledding on the back of our property, which had three hills," said his son. "Sometimes, if it both snowed and rained, it was like a sheet of ice. My father once grabbed a sled, backed up, took a running start and jumped on the icy crust. I thought he was going to hurt himself. He managed to get through all three hills, across someone's yard and out onto a nearby street, Hill Street, before he finally came to a stop. He had to walk all the way back up, and he was laughing the whole time."
