Summary

Sophia "Sue" Carpinella was born in New Hampshire to poor immigrant parents, but she never let it stop her. "Her family was from Albania," said a niece, Elaine Mavrikis, in New Hampshire. "They didn't have it easy and struggled. But she went to school and was very smart, and an avid reader. In fact, we both belonged to book clubs, and I could talk to her about anything. She was a great listener, and up on current world events. She also was a class act, a classy dresser and always looked immaculate. She was open and very generous, and I could always depend on her. She was always there for me, and in fact I lived with her for a awhile."

Carpinella, who died March 9 at age 89, extended her caring side to everybody, even strangers. "We were living in Hamden across from East Rock Park, and kids used to go sledding there," said a son, Perry Carpinella of Hamden.
