A Life Remembered: West Haven Man Was Father, Husband, Hero

Summary

Lifelong resident and longtime city employee Leslie Clement happened to take a class in CPR as part of his job. This turned out to be a fortunate thing, as he saved a young woman's life several years ago. "On March 30, 1998, someone was knocking at our door," said Clement's wife of 16 years, Donna Clement. "A girl in her 20s was having a heart attack in front of our house, and he ran out and performed CPR on her until the paramedics arrived. A year later, there was a knock on our door and there stood the girl. She said, 'You don't remember me (but) you saved my life.'"

Clement, who died Saturday at age 51 of pulmonary hypertension, was given the Captain's Award by the West Haven Fire Department, a citation by the state and a special award by the local Elks Club.
