James Ward would make any excuse to get out on the water and fish, and he loved to take along his children, grandchildren and assorted other relatives.

"We would go out all day long on the weekends," said a daughter, Doris Davis of New Haven. "He'd get me up at 5. I once caught an eel and thought it was a snake, which I hate, and he laughed about that. But I was always happy when he took me fishing with him."
