HAMDEN -- Service station owner William A. Raccio had a very distinctive whistle. "My son, David, was having breakfast with my father at a local diner one morning," said son James Raccio of Wallingford. "My father was whistling, something he did all the time. Somebody from another booth turned around and said, 'Is that Bill Raccio?' The guy, a former customer, recognized my father's whistle, and it had been years!"

A happy-go-lucky person who did a great Groucho Marx imitation, Raccio also loved to play bocce and smoke cigars.
