A Life Remembered: No. Branford Woman Was Witty, Elegant

Summary

Marie Sommo was fashion-conscious from an early age, and knew how to get what she wanted. "Marie was always elegantly dressed," said a cousin, Maria DeFalco of New Haven. "When Marie was a teenager, she saw a pair of red shoes she wanted. She asked her mother if she could buy them. Her mother argued that Marie already owned many pairs of shoes and did not need another pair. Marie was close to her father and went to him. He said to her mother, 'Yes, I see that Marie has many pairs of shoes, but I don't see a red pair.' Well, Marie got her red pair of shoes, and we laughed every time she would tell that story."

While Sommo, who died June 1 at age 74, was elegant, she was never afraid of hard work or getting her hands dirty. "She was always involved in one home improvement project or another and could often be found on a ladder, painting or working outside, digging in the dirt," said DeFalco.
