Reading Along: Santa Always has Room in the Sleigh for a Good Book or Two

Summary


As the holidays approach and thoughts turn to choosing just the right gift for those special children in your life, here are some suggestions to encourage a love for reading. Choosing children's books can be a daunting experience. The good news is that local bookstores will assist shoppers in choosing books appropriate for a child's age, interest and reading or listening level. Some series list the appropriate interest and reading level on the cover. If a child has a favorite series, boxed gift sets are available and some include puppets, plush characters or story props.

- Holiday books are always appropriate and appreciated and can create traditions that last a lifetime. Some also have companion DVDs which will help bring the reading experience to life after reading the story. "Christmas Eve on Sesame Street," "The Polar Express" and "A Wish for Wings That Work" are longtime personal favorites which have become traditions in our household and have now been handed down from my adult children to theirs.
