Letter to the Editor: Quick Executions Would Help Build 'Safe Havens'

Summary

With the tragic and despicable events in Cheshire last week, Randall Beach's column about trying to create a haven of safety for his children resonated with me, as I'm sure it did with any parent. Beach's comparisons of the Cheshire murders and the 1959 massacre of a Kansas family by two ex-con lowlifes, as chronicled in Truman Capote's "In Cold Blood," were chillingly accurate. Creating safe havens for our kids is more likely to succeed when the criminal justice system is truly looking out for them. But, that system failed miserably when the suspects in the Cheshire murders were paroled, despite well-established histories of recidivism.

Beach did not reveal the ending of the Kansas story: In April 1965, both murderers were hanged in Kansas. One hopes that if the Cheshire murderers are found guilty, Connecticut will expeditiously follow suit; albeit, unfortunately, without the nooses. That, along with an effective "three-strikes" law, would bring us one step closer to creating a safer haven for our children and for everyone.
