Propane Leak Snarls Traffic On Route 79

Summary

MADISON -- A propane leak closed Route 79 in both directions for nearly an hour Friday, as police, fire and gas company officials worked to stop the propane from spilling from a cracked pipe. Shortly before 11:30 a.m., a car accidently backed into the large propane tanks that supply Legend Hill Condominiums, damaging the pipe that leads from the tanks, police said.

People working at nearby Kathleen H. Ryerson Elementary School were asked to stay indoors during the leak, police said. Legend Hill Condominiums were not evacuated because the gas farm is not near the units, and is at the back of the property, police said. By about 12:15 p.m., the road was back open, police said.
