Summary


Simon Aspelin gazed into the Beijing sky and saw the vision of the Swedish flag inching its way to its final destination. Then the 34-year-old Stockholm resident peered to his left to see Roger Federer standing at the top of the medal stand and the Bryan brothers with bronze medals draped around their neck. Somehow the pain of the a heart-wrenching loss in the Olympics' doubles final didn't sting quite as much. Aspelin, the only one of the 50 Olympians competing in this week's Pilot Pen Tennis tournament who brought back a medal, would have preferred to be showing off a gold medal at his meeting with reporters at the Connecticut Tennis Center on Tuesday.

But Aspelin and Thomas Johansson had to settle for silver after losing to the Switzerland team of Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka 6- 3, 6-4, 6-7, 6-3 in the doubles final in Beijing.

"It was pretty amazing," said Aspelin who is the top seed in New Haven's doubles draw with Julian Knowle. "We were disappointed because we had just lost.
