Picard Walks: Ex-Teacher Gets Suspended Sentence in Bat Attack

Mark Picard will serve no jail time for attacking his daughter's softball coach with a bat in 2005, provided he complies with a lengthy list of conditions for probation. Picard, 48, of North Branford, received a suspended five-year sentence from Superior Court Judge Nicola E. Rubinow on Wednesday for his attack 17 months ago on former Sacred Heart Academy softball coach John Crovo.

"You have a 48-year-old man with no prior criminal record," said Rubinow. "He has already made tremendous progress in treatment, and has made large civil restitution. ... His sentence will be served publicly where it will benefit the community, with jail time, to use the modern phrase, hanging over his head."
