Pfizer to Fill in Contaminated No. Haven Pond

Summary

The Pfizer Corp. wants to temporarily fill in the contaminated pond on the site of the old Upjohn plant in order to treat the contaminated water and sediment that are present. The plant has been vacant for 12 years, and there are numerous sites on the 75-acre site contaminated with industrial waste. The pond, which runs six feet deep in some places, originally was constructed as a reservoir in the event of a fire at the site. The Planning and Zoning Commission approved the proposal Monday night.

Attorney John Parese represented Pfizer, the legal successor to the Pharmacia & Upjohn Co., which operated the plant at 41 Stiles Lane. He said the interim proposal would allow the pond to be stabilized while the company and environmental officials focus their attention on portions of the property that are far more contaminated.
