Old-timers often say that migration is not as good as it used to be -- that there seem to be fewer birds than in past years.

Such claims can be surprisingly difficult to confirm, since migration in any particular year varies because of many factors, including the local weather and the timing of birding efforts (more birds are seen if a large migration event happens on a weekend, when more birders are in the field). So it is often difficult to compare the number of migratory birds from year to year and determine if there has been any consistent change.
