Opera Lovers Have Some Great Local Choices This Week

Summary

Opera performances are scarce in the area, but this week, opera lovers will have two productions to entice them. Yale Baroque Opera Project is presenting what is thought to be the first fully staged version in 35 years of Cavalli's "Sciopione Affricano," and Opera Theater of Connecticut gets into the holiday spirit with its reduced- length version of "Hansel and Gretel," in English, accompanied by piano with a children's chorus and dancing angels.

"Sciopione Affricano," the seventh full-length production of the Yale Baroque Opera Project, will be performed by students enrolled in Music 322, a course in analyzing, directing and performing in early opera taught by Yale professor of music Richard Lalli.
