We are so conditioned to the pitch count in the major leagues that we almost wince when we hear of the pitching exploits of Tom Lawrence over the past two weeks for the newly crowned Class LL state champion West Haven baseball team. We really shouldn't be because this is the way amateur baseball has been played for a century, where the premier pitchers want the ball in the toughest spots, and damn the infernal pitch count.

Lawrence has been described as a throwback because what he accomplished Saturday -- on two days' rest after pitching West Haven to a 117-pitch, 3-2 semifinal victory Shelton Wednesday -- is the stuff that is virtually extinct on the pro level.
