When Jim Calhoun took his first trip to the National Invitation Tournament as the University of Connecticut's men's coach, the tournament had the same appearance as this season's format. Since then college basketball has changed, and in the last two years, so has the NIT.

That is why, by late tonight, the string of 19 consecutive postseason appearances since 1987-88 by the Huskies may end. Or, because of their Big East membership and 17 wins, their stretch will continue.
