My column on a woman from up North who felt uncomfortable in North Carolina churches brought this sensitive reply: Q: This may come as a shock to the lady who wrote complaining about a lack of formality in North Carolina churches. As a teenager, I played more Bach cantatas in a -- gasp! -- North Carolina Southern Baptist church than I can count. Perhaps she should put aside her snobbery, let her fingers do the walking on Google and find a more mainstream, formal church. They are most certainly there.
I've attended formal services in Lutheran, Presbyterian, Quaker, Catholic and Episcopal churches in the same area where she lives, for decades. And yes, the pastors are educated and attended seminary. Also, she should try to broaden her horizons a bit and attend a Moravian love feast at the Old Salem church in Winston- Salem, which dates to Colonial times.
