Musical megastars seldom appear with the New Haven Symphony Orchestra these days. But if Itzhak Perlman and Emanuel Ax make themselves scarce at Woolsey Hall, the orchestra has something just as interesting to offer. As it showed once again at Thursday's concert, NHSO regularly schedules the Perlmans and Axes of tomorrow. Ji-Yong is not a name most of the audience knew, partly because the pianist is not yet 15 years old. Everyone present, however, is likely to remember that name after his bold, confident and sensitive performance of the Piano Concerto in E-flat Major, an early work of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
The boyish Ji-Yong, Korean by birth, indulged in none of the extravagant pantomime that some pianists like to display. Leaning close to the keyboard, he seemed natural and businesslike. His musical attack showed the same qualities. The rich tone emerging from the instrument, despite strong orchestral accompaniment, demonstrated his technical strength.
