The big hitters at Rentschler Field on June 29 will not be limited to the 100 or so high school football all-stars from Connecticut and Rhode Island who will take part in the Governors' Cup. A press conference at the Crowne Plaza in Cromwell Thursday ushered in a new era in the summer all-star football classic with the announcement of a partnership with the National Football League. Governors' Cup organizers believe the addition of a grant from the NFL, expected to range somewhere between $6,000-10,000, will bring the stature of the game to new heights.
"It is only going to get better," said Fitch-Groton football coach Jim Buonocore, the Connecticut squad's offensive coordinator in the Governors' Cup.
