Milford's Schick Plant Earns Osha Safety Honors

Summary


Almost 10 years after traces of a potentially carcinogenic chemical were found at its manufacturing facilities, the Schick plant here is being honored by the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Deposits of trichloroethylene, or TCE, were found in 1997 at the plant, which the company has since cleaned up. The discovery of the chemicals caused uproar in the surrounding residential community, and the city tested many people's properties for the chemical.

But now OSHA is honoring the company by accepting it into its "prestigious" Voluntary Protection Program, or VPP, with "Merit" status. Companies OSHA accepts into the VPP are recognized as only those "committed to effective employee protection beyond the requirements of OSHA standards."
