Milford Man Loved Anything Involving the Outdoors

Summary

MILFORD -- Richard Hurlburt had a real thing for horses. "When he was growing up, he always wanted a horse," said a son, Matthew Hurlburt of Orange. "So when he was 14, he bought a horse named Rusty with money from his paper route. He then built a barn with my grandfather, and he told me they would gather up horse manure and pack it in the barn sides to keep Rusty warm in the wintertime. He eventually started taking the horse out on his paper route, and Rusty liked to use the mailboxes as scratching posts. In time, the horse would knock them over, and my father and grandfather would have to go out on Sundays and put all the mailboxes back up."

Hurlburt died Oct. 2 at age 71.
