Mazzaferro Dives to the Top

Summary


Four years ago, as a freshman diver at Cheshire High, Dan Mazzaferro did not know what to expect. He had his own expectations, his own goals, and his ultimate dream of performing in the Summer Olympics some day. Diving against upperclassmen who were taller and stronger was an exercise in intimidation. But as he competed against the upperclassmen, Mazzaferro discovered there was an equalizer. His technique was just as good, or better, than the taller, more experienced divers.

After going through an unbeaten dual meet season as a freshman, he won the diving at the Southern Connecticut Conference meet and success seemed very possible at the Class L state meet. But there, senior Trey Cassetta of Darien brought Mazzaferro down to earth. Cassetta won that showdown, and Mazzaferro had to settle for second.
