Master Gardener Knew How to Tend to Family, Community?

Summary

NORTH HAVEN -- Master gardener Carmela "Dolly" Chagnon was one to speak her mind, and let the chips fall where they may. "When she was president of the North Haven Garden Club, she discovered that the town was hacking up the cherry trees on Washington Avenue," said her husband of 49 years, Philip. "She got hold of the first selectman and laid into him, hot and heavy. Not long after, he called her and asked her to be on the town's ethics board. He told her he respected the way she spoke her mind."

Chagnon, who died May 7 at age 69, was "very smart and the leader of the parade, so to speak," said her husband. "She always told it the way it was, and she was usually right."
