Man Pulled to Safety Following Car Crash

Summary

HAMDEN -- A police officer pulled a man to safety after the man allegedly tried to run the officer over, according to Capt. Ronald Smith. The incident began at about 2:15 a.m. Sunday when the officer saw a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed, without headlights, the wrong way on Goodrich Street. The officer followed the vehicle to Beechwood Lane, which is a dead-end street. The fleeing vehicle then turned around and accelerated at a high rate of speed, allegedly attempting to strike the police vehicle, Smith said. The officer evaded the vehicle by driving on a residential lawn.

The fleeing vehicle continued to drive at a high rate of speed, without headlights, into New Haven before crashing into a front porch on Winchester Avenue, Smith said.
