The things mothers tell their daughters, even if it sometimes takes a lifetime. In her final years, British-born Elsie Trzcinski had a beaut to share with her oldest daughter.

"Near the end of World War II, the hospitals in London had been evacuated because of the bombings," said Brenda Wagner of Branford. "My mother was pregnant with me and had been transported from London to a country estate. When she went into labor, there was no operating room, so they put her on a billiard table -- and I was delivered on that billiard table! I only leaned this a couple of years ago, when out of the clear blue, she came out with it."
