Summary


No doubt, the opinion of Dr. Frank J. Mongillo III concerning hospice and palliative care in the United States, and Florence Wald, were intended to be provocative and inflammatory. To publicly make such inaccurate claims is irresponsible. His clinical information regarding hospice and palliative care is entirely inaccurate. His personal comments regarding Wald, a devoted caregiver and educator, are inaccurate and disrespectful.

Hospice and palliative medicine does, amongst many treatments, include hydration, antibiotics and nutrition by mouth, intravenous lines, central lines and gastric tubes whenever it is beneficial.
