Letter to the Editor: 'Our Withering Lives Are Only for the Time Being'

Summary


The Rev. Curtis M. Cofield II and his wife, Elsie Cofield, went to South Africa a few years ago to further understand the pandemic of HIV and AIDS. I am there now as a Fulbright scholar doing research on HIV and AIDS. In addition to his social ministry legacy, he, Elsie Cofield and the Immanuel Church have helped a countless number of seminarians from Yale Divinity School to develop their leadership skills. I was privileged to know him as a student and senior colleague.

Our lives, like a red rose with its unfolding beauty, perfume and intricate design, will soon perish. Cofield, who found strength and guidance in his Christian faith, would remind us that our withering lives are only for the time being. There is a new flowering that knows not death for those who believe.
