I agree that there should be more respect for the flag, as Ronald Leddy said in his letter "Few city cops show respect to flag," but differ on what he saw and how he described it. Approximately 80 police officers are assigned to the parade for his and others' safety. They should be looking at the crowds, traffic flow, etc., not the parade.

He refers to those who did not salute as not being "true Americans." I and my brother and sister officers wear bullet- resistant vests to work each day. I am an Army reservist of almost 20 years who has been deployed to Kosovo and Iraq. Many in the New Haven Police Department are combat veterans.
