Summary
As a teacher for 21 years in both regular and special education, I kindly ask the state Department of Education to reconsider the testing of special education students using the same state tests, Mastery and CAPT, used for other students. Has the No Child Left Behind Act made us forget that these children learn differently? What is the message we are sending to the parents and our special education students? Hasn't a team of professionals already diagnosed that their child has a learning disability or perhaps another type of handicap? What message are we trying to give these children? The tests are just screaming out another failure for the child. Children need to be encouraged, not discouraged by yet another score.
